Under government plans, almost all new homes built in England will be fitted with solar panels during construction. The government wants to install solar panels on as many new properties as possible and plans to make them mandatory on new builds by 2027.
The solar panel measures could be unveiled as part of The Future Homes Standard regulations.

Solar panels on new build homes
Though the policy will add £3,000 – £4,000 to the cost of building new homes, homeowners will save over £1,000 on annual energy bills.
Councils have urged the government to make solar panels a requirement on all new homes to help meet climate targets and cut household bills.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s official spokesman said:
“Of course we want to see solar panels on as many new homes as possible. The Future Homes Standard, which will be published in the coming months, will include measures to drive this, we’re working on the details of that and will provide an update on that in due course. But it’s good news for householders who want lower energy bills.”
Around 60% of new build homes do not have solar panels, but to boost clean energy and save households money on their bills, solar panels are to become mandatory under the government’s new proposals.
The new plan will require 80% of new homes to be built with solar panels covering at least 40% of the property’s ground area. The remaining 19% of homes will have exemptions that apply due to factors such as roof pitch and shading.
