Emmanuel Methodist Church is a busy Barnsley church that has invested in solar panels with our help and grant funding in partnership with Barnsley Council. The solar panels installed at this church will generate renewable energy to power daytime and evening activities. The savings made annually will help Emmanuel Methodist Church invest back into the church and community it supports.

Solar panels for church buildings

A grant was awarded to part-fund the church’s sustainable development through the Net Zero Barnsley programme delivered by The Business Village in partnership with Barnsley Council. Church Trustee Jan Eldred, with Pete Lane, led the commercial solar panel installation and worked closely with our Commercial Team, who designed, supplied and installed the solar panel system.

The 36 solar panels on this church building will generate:

  • Around 12,725 kwh of electricity a year
  • Save the church £3,000 on energy bills every year
  • Reduce their CO2 carbon emissions by 2.46 tonnes annually

The £24,000 solar PV system has been designed with an inverter and battery so the renewable solar electricity can support the church’s diverse programme of daily activities day and night.

Church Trustee Jan Eldred:

“Gaining expert help and financial support to invest in our solar panels has helped us to achieve our ambition to have them much sooner as part of our drive to be as sustainable a church as possible. Being able to store the electricity generated by day in a battery so that we can use it at our evening events to power lighting and kettles and sound systems is a very important bonus. We will work to fund more batteries for even greater efficiency.”

Energy efficient upgrades for church buildings

Emmanuel Methodist Church has also invested in an insulation scheme to lag pipes and fix window seals to prevent draughts. Alongside this, the church has installed motion sensor LED lighting. Emmanuel Methodist Church is leading positive change for local people. They’re an active partner in Barnsley’s Positive Climate Partnership and Barnsley Council’s Sustainable Barnsley campaign. Having achieved the Silver Award in the international ECO Churches Framework, solar panels at their premises will now contribute to its drive to achieve Gold status.

Jan added: “I can’t say enough about how helpful everybody has been through this process. It has been good to be part of an active Net Zero Barnsley community of businesses and organisations working towards the same goal.
