Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs)

Ground source heat pumps use heat from the ground producing a renewable, low carbon and environmentally friendly heat source.

We’re currently only installing Air Source Heat Pumps.

Ground Source Heat Pump

What is a Ground Source Heat Pump?

Ground source heat pumps extract heat from the ground to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems and hot water.

Thermal transfer fluid (TTF) flows around a loop of pipe buried in your garden. The extracted heat from the ground is absorbed into the fluid before passing through a heat exchanger into the heat pump. The temperature of the fluid is then raised and transferred to heat to water.

The pipes for ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are buried in the ground as loops in trenches or vertically in boreholes. The length of the ground loops varies depending on the size of your home and the heat required. An area of around 1 acre of free land is ideal for the average property. Inside your home, you will need space to house the ground source heat pump unit. Most heat pumps are 600mm square and 1.5m tall.

Is a Ground Source Heat Pump right for me?

Inside your home, you will need space to house the ground source heat pump unit. To run, heat pumps require electricity and do have a small impact on the environment. This impact is outweighed by the heat extracted from the ground, air or water that is being renewed naturally.

What are the benefits of Ground Source Heat Pumps?

  • Lower heating bills
  • Reduce carbon emissions
  • £7,500 grant under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
  • Minimal maintenance required
  • Virtually noise-free
How do ground source heat pumps work
Ground Source Heat Pump Installation

Will a Ground Source Heat Pump work in cold weather?

Yes, ground source heat pumps work in cold weather. When the temperature drops, the ground remains at an average temperature of 10°C at 1m below ground all year round. Whatever the weather, a ground source heat pump will provide you with efficient heating and hot water. Ground source heat pumps have less efficiency variance throughout the year compared to an air source heat pump, but both are still extremely energy efficient.

Ground source heat pumps aren’t recommended for every home, as a home must be well insulated for heat pumps to work effectively as they produce heat at a lower temperature than traditional boilers.
