Use our air source heat pump calculator to determine how much a heat pump can save you in your home.

Air source heat pump calculator – what size heat pump do I need?

Before a heat pump is installed, the correct surveys and heat loss calculations must be completed. These calculations must be completed for your air source heat pump to run efficiently. All properties vary in size and location, and heat pumps are manufactured with this in mind. Our heat pump calculator will help show you how much you can save with a heat pump.

To get the maximum benefits from a heat pump, it must be correctly sized for your home, and your home must be well insulated. If these important factors are overlooked at the survey stage, this results in wasted energy, increased electricity bills and unnecessary heat loss. You can also save on your heat pump costs with The Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Under this scheme, the government will contribute up to £7,500 towards heat pump system installation in UK homes.

Installing an air source heat pump – save money with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

If you’re living in England or Wales, you can get a grant to save money on the installation of their air source heat pump. With the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), you can get up to £7,500 off the cost of a new air source heat pump or a ground source heat pump. The scheme operates on a first-come, first-served basis and ends April 2028. Your installer will apply for the heat pump funding, and if approved, £7,500 will be deducted from the cost of your heat pump install. You will then pay for any leftover costs for installation. Worried about the cost of a heat pump? With Aira they make the switch easy and affordable.

Funding under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme can only be used when you’re replacing fossil fuel heating systems.

How much does an air source heat pump cost?

On average, an air source heat pump can cost around £10,000-£12,000 (without funding deductions), and there are several factors to consider first. The following must be considered before we can recommend a suitable heat pump for your property:

  • The type, size and age of the property, and how many family members live in the property
  • The quality of existing insulation with heat loss calculations
  • The current heating system – the size of radiators and if it has underfloor heating
  • Your property’s location and outdoor temperatures in your area

Aside from the costs, it’s also important to look at the savings that can be made. Switching to a heat pump will cut your heatings costs by 25%, as they’re four times more efficient than gas boilers. A heat pump can also add up to £8,000 to your property value.
