What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?

The Smart Export Guarantee, also known as the SEG tariff, is a government-backed initiative that launched on 1 January 2020. The SEG scheme provides payments for those who export excess electricity generated from their solar panels back to the National Grid. This means that if you generate electricity at home from the sun or wind, you can sell any energy you don’t use back to the grid – rather than see it go to waste.

The Smart Export Guarantee is not to be confused with the Feed-in Tariff (FIT). The SEG replaces the FIT scheme which ended on 1 April 2019 for new applicants. So, if your home or business is generating more electricity than you use, you could be eligible for Smart Export Guarantee payments.

How do I apply for a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff?

Big energy companies will pay you for the renewable you put in the grid, and they set their own SEG tariff prices. They must pay more than zero, but there can be big differences between the best and the worst tariffs so it’s always best to shop around first.

To be able to apply for an SEG tariff, you’ll need to have one of the renewable energy technologies below:

You must also:

  • Be the owner of the generation unit e.g. solar panels.
  • Have a generation unit with a capacity of up to 5MW.
  • Have a meter that is able to record energy that’s exported to the grid, on a half-hourly basis.
  • Have an installation that is certified to the MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme), or Flexi-Orb.
  • Have the ability to opt out of FiT payments. or be prepared to lose your FiT export payment if you move to SEG.
  • Not be receiving SEG payments from another licensee.

Can you choose any SEG supplier?

Yes, you can choose any SEG supplier, regardless of who your energy supplier is. So, if EDF supply your electricity, but EON offers the best SEG tariff at the time, you can opt for them as your SEG tariff supplier.

How will I be paid?

If your SEG company also supplies your electricity, your payment may be deducted from your monthly energy bill. If you’re with a different supplier, you’ll be paid by bank transfer. How frequently you’ll be paid will vary, and it pays to do thorough research on the different SEG tariffs available to find out which tariff suits you best. The current SEG supplier list can be found on Ofgem.

How much will I earn on an SEG Tariff?

The amount you earn will vary on the tariff you chose and how much you export. Although you will not be paid for electricity that you use yourself, you’ll be paid for the electricity you export back to the grid. Plus, you’ll save money through importing less from the grid.

You’ll be paid by the energy companies who buy the power and there are two types of Smart Export Guarantee tariffs:

  • Fixed rate: you will be paid a set amount per kilowatt that you export to the grid, regardless of when you export it.
  • Flexible rate: the amount you’re paid will vary on how valuable the electricity is at different times of the day. If you’re exporting electricity during a time where the demand is high, you’ll be paid more than if it was exported during a time where the demand was low.
